Why do we have LEAP Day or LEAP Years?

Leap years are fascinating for kids to learn about! A leap year is a year that has an extra day added to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year. This extra day is February 29th, which occurs every four years. The reason we have leap years is because it actually takes the Earth about 365.2422 days to orbit the sun, not exactly 365 days. By adding an extra day every four years, we can make up for this discrepancy.

Kids might be interested to know that not every year divisible by 4 is a leap year. For example, the year 1900 was not a leap year, even though it is divisible by 4. However, the year 2000 was a leap year because it is divisible by 400. This adjustment helps keep our calendar accurate over time. Another fun fact is that people born on February 29th are called "leaplings" or "leapers" and only get to celebrate their actual birthday every four years. Learning about leap years can be a fun way for kids to understand how our calendar works!
